A Look at Diversity in Public Media Journalism

PMJA is proud to release its new report: A Look at Diversity in Public Media Journalism.

The report sheds light on systemic barriers, identity-driven disparities, and actionable opportunities to create more inclusive newsrooms.

Key Findings:
  • Perceptions of Value and Underrepresentation: Respondents reported feeling undervalued compared to white and/or male colleagues, despite having advanced qualifications and extensive experience. Issues like educational elitism and disparities tied to career paths emerged as key concerns.

  • Impact of Identity on Work Experiences: Race, LGBTQIA+ status, and age significantly shaped respondents’ experiences, with many noting feelings of exclusion and underrepresentation in newsroom culture.

  • Turnover and Retention Issues: A lack of support for journalists of color, younger staff, and LGBTQIA+ individuals has contributed to higher turnover rates, with workplace culture cited as a significant factor.

  • Barriers to Advancement: Respondents highlighted systemic challenges, including being confined to entry-level roles despite qualifications, underscoring the need for better career development support.

A Look at Diversity in Public Media Journalism outlines key areas for improvement, including fostering inclusive newsroom cultures, improving mentorship and professional development programs, and rethinking hiring practices. It also calls for further research into how identity impacts career trajectories and retention in the industry.
