Professional Bio
Award-winning independent radio journalist/producer. I was a staff producer at NPR in Washington at All Things Consider and other programs and worked on three Peabody Award-winning projects.
I spent 10 years as general manager of WYSO Public Radio in Yellow Springs, Ohio, leading it through a transformative period, including increasing power to 50,000 watts, during my tenure we doubled the staff and revenues.
I'm the author of a New York Times best-selling book called "If I Live to be 100: Lessons from the Centenarians, based on an NPR series called 100 Years of Stories. It chronicles 2 years I spent at age 50, interviewing centenarians around the US, learning about aging.
I am the lead producer of a 12 part history podcast called The Ohio Country, created at WYSO with funding from Ohio Humanities. It tells the story of Ohio's indigenous tribes: how they were removed by the US government and how they are revitalizing themselves today and reaching out to reconnect with their homelands.
I created the Center for Community Voices at WYSO, a training and production unit that has trained hundreds of community members of all ages to make radio stories and resulted in hundreds of unique and award-winning stories for our listeners. Served on the boards of PRIMA, Public Radio in Mid-America and AIR, the Association of Independents in Radio.
