Bruce Auster

Bruce Auster is Managing Editor for Collaborative Journalism, leading NPR's Collaborative Journalism efforts.

Previously, he was the Director of Collaborative Investigations. In this role, he oversaw investigative journalism projects that involved working across teams at NPR or with any of the approximately 200 Member station newsrooms in the network.

Before that, he was NPR's Senior Director for the Collaborative Journalism Network. He was at the center of an effort to transform the public radio system and establish a new way for NPR and the newsrooms of hundreds of NPR Member stations to work together.

Prior to taking on that effort, Auster led NPR's National Security unit from 2008 to 2015. In that role, he directed NPR's coverage of international security issues from Washington—including stories involving the U.S. military and the intelligence community. Before that, Auster was the Senior Supervising Editor of NPR's Morning Edition for five years, where he worked with Morning Edition hosts Steve Inskeep and Renee Montagne to bring listeners interviews with leading political, international, and cultural figures.

Before joining NPR, Auster spent sixteen years as a reporter and editor at U.S. News & World Report. He was the magazine's Pentagon correspondent for five years and also served as the magazine's White House correspondent during the first term of the Clinton administration.

He is a graduate of Northwestern University and Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government.
