Opening Doors: Become a Mentor & Empower the Next Generation

PMJA is seeking mentors to join our Opening Doors program. This exciting initiative provides training, mentorship, and paid internships to talented Black, Indigenous or People of Color (BIPOC) journalism students with a focus on science, health, and economics reporting.

Opening Doors selects 10 college juniors and seniors to participate in a two-day training ahead of the PMJA Annual Conference, before they secure a 16-week internship at a local public media station. Each Opening Doors participant will be paired with a mentor (that’s you!) who will help them develop and build meaningful connections at the conference, during their internship and beyond.

Apply to be a mentor by March 31 April 9. Application below.

As a mentor, you will:
  • Join us for all three days of the PMJA conference (June 25-27) and connect with your mentee.
  • Potentially be selected to lead a training session for the student cohort.
  • Keep the conversation going: Touch base once a month between July and December with at least three check ins via phone or video conference.
  • Teamwork makes the dream work: Participate in three group meetings with other mentors and mentees.
  • Help them set goals: Collaborate with your mentee to map out their professional goals.
  • Share your expertise: Submit a brief report on your mentee's progress to PMJA by January 15th.
Why you should become a mentor:
  • Make a lasting impact: Help a student find their voice, and launch their career in public media.
  • Boost your skills: Sharpen your own mentoring abilities and gain fresh perspectives.
  • Grow your network: Connect with other talented public media professionals and emerging journalists.
  • Score some perks: Receive a $500 stipend, and enjoy complimentary 3-day registration to the #PMJA2025 conference in Kansas City.
